Preparation time:20 mins
Serves 4


Ingredients:
Moong dal-1/4 cup
Small onion-10 nos.
Tomato-1 medium
Green chillies-4
Red chilli-2
Curry leaves-1 sprig
Brinjal-4
Potato-1 medium
Salt to taste
Tamarind-one inch piece
Oil-2 tablespoon

For seasoning:
Mustard-1/2 teaspoon
Spliy urad dal-1/2 teaspoon
Hing-2 pinches

Preparation:
Pressure cook the dal for two whistles,till it reaches a mashy consistency

Wash and chop all the vegetables and keep it ready as shown in the picture


In a pan, add oil and when it is warm and ready add the seasonings
When it splutters, add onion, and cook till turns transparent
Now add the tomatoes and fry till they become mushy
Then add the green and red chillies and curry leaves
Now add the chopped brinjal and fry till its colour changes,
then potatoes and required amount of salt and fry for a few minutes
Add enough water so as it covers the vegetables and pressure cook it for just one whistle
Use a ladle and mash the brinjals as much as possible

Once its completely cooled down, open it,add the tamarind pulp and add enough water

If its very thick you can add a little water to adjust the consistency, then bring it to a brisk boil and check for salt
Your koosmali is ready to be served along with idly or idiappan


Notes:
Those those who like capsicum, you can alternate capsicum instead of brinjal
Or you can add half a capsicum along with the brinjal
There is no turmeric in this recipe, please do not add turmeric to get the colour as it spoils the authentic taste
