Tattai payaru kuzhambu



Preparation time:
30 mins
Serves 4

Ingredients:
Small onions – 10 nos.cut in halves
Garlic – 6 to 8 cloves
Tomato – 1 big finely chopped 
Curry leaves – 1 sprig
Red cow peas – 1 cup
Tamarind – pulp of 1 lemon size ball
Chittinad sambar powder – 4 table spoons
Coriander powder – 2 tablespoons
Turmeric powder
Oil – 3 table spoons
Salt to taste

For seasoning:
Jeera – 1 teaspoon
Sauf – ½ teaspoon
Black pepper – 1 teaspoon
Hing – ¼ teaspoon
Fenugreek seeds – ½ teaspoon

Procedure:

Dry roast the peas in a heavy bottom vessel until the aroma comes out.

In a cooker add the peas and 1½ cups water and cook it for 4 whistles or until its soft.

Keep a pan on the stove, add oil and when its warm and ready add the seasoning. When it starts to splutter add curry leaves, turmeric and fry till the raw smell goes.

Then add onions and cook till the colour changes, then add garlic and fry, now add the tomatoes and cook until they become mushy.

Now add the sambar powder, coriander powder and salt to taste and fry until the raw smell goes away. Now add the tamarind pulp and allow it to boil for 2 to 3 mins. Then add this mixture to the cooked peas in the cooker and cook it for 2 whistle so that it becomes a homogenous gravy.


Open the lid and now you can add water and adjust the consistency and check for salt and your dish is ready to be served with rice.

Notes:
In tamil its taatai payaru, other names for this are red chori in hindi, red cow peas in english.

Bigger the red cow peas it tastes better.
But smaller sized ones have more nutritional values as they are indigenously grown.

Its better to use country tomatoes because bangalore tomatoes does not contribute to the taste nor consistency of the kuzhambu

This is a traditional preparation and its rich in protein
as this peas consist of 25% protein and has very low fat content so very good for health.

Left overs are great with idly or dosa too.
